This book covers a wide range of topics pertaining to numerical computation. However, readers may find a few their favorite topics missing. In fact, the topics of each of the chapters have themselves been the subjects of full-fledged books. This book has evolved out of lecture courses delivered to Research Scholars at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research during the period 1978-88. It is intended for both reasonable background in mathematics as well as computer programming. There is a wide difference between numerical methods for computers and those for desk calculators. The enormous increase in the speed enables us to solve much larger problems on computers and frequently such problems are more sensitive to various errors during calculations.
